Do you sometimes sigh at how much work and time everyday household care requires? Come and see the new exhibition at the Museum of the Wallachia Region at the Kinský Castle in Valašské Meziříčí, which shows how difficult life was for housewives 100 years ago. In the glass display niches on the upper floor of the exhibition space, you will be able to view the objects that helped them in the daily whirlwind of household chores—tasks they had to carry out without electricity or running water.
The exhibition opens on February 10 and will be on display until May 31 of this year. Kinský Castle is open every day except Monday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The exhibition Helpers in Our Great-Grandmothers’ Households recalls the everyday reality of women’s lives in the home 100 years ago. Their work was invisible, yet constant—from washing and cooking, to securing supplies, making and repairing clothes, and caring for children, the sick, and elderly family members. As they had to do without washing machines, refrigerators, and other conveniences of modern times, their work required far more physical effort, time, knowledge, and a well-thought-out system of organizing daily tasks.
At the exhibition, we will present the objects available to housewives at that time—from washboards and irons to kitchen utensils and tools for handicrafts and hygiene. Join us in remembering a time when being a housewife truly meant working tirelessly from morning until night.
At Kinský Castle, you can also visit the fascinating exhibition Archaeological Secrets of Valašské Meziříčí, the permanent multimedia exhibition People in the Landscape, Landscape in People, and a smaller exhibition dedicated to the history of firefighting. For children, there is a playroom and many engaging interactive features. You can also enjoy refreshments in the stylish castle café. All visitor areas are wheelchair accessible.
The Museum of the Wallachia Region also prepares a wide range of interesting programs for you at Kinský Castle and its other branches, not only in Valašské Meziříčí.
