The centuries-old mysteries of Valašské Meziříčí, hidden beneath the cobblestones and concrete of the modern city, are revealed in a new archaeological exhibition prepared by the Museum of the Moravian Wallachia region at Kinsky Castle. Thanks to many years of precise archaeological work and tons of manually sifted soil, you will have a unique opportunity to look back to the period when the first prehistoric people entered the city. The opening will take place on Thursday, the 13th of November, at 5:00 p.m. It will also include the ceremonial christening of the publication Valašské Meziříčí: Medieval and Early Modern Town – Archaeology.
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Visitors will learn how archaeologists work, i.e. how the museum objects on exhibition came to be displayed. They will also see the latest prehistoric finds from Valašské Meziříčí and its immediate surroundings. Worth mentioning are, for example, two Germanic brooches from the turn of the millennium.
Another period that the exhibition will focus on is the High Middle Ages. This key period in the city's development will be represented by architectural fragments of houses from the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries and related finds. The most significant of these is undoubtedly a collection of metal objects, which, thanks to their unusual composition, are truly unique.
The third and fourth rooms will be dedicated to finds from the early and late modern periods. The Renaissance and Baroque periods were a time of significant social and economic change in Valašské Meziříčí, as evidenced by the archaeological artifacts on display. Visitors will be offered a diverse range of objects, such as pipes from the first municipal water supply system, the original stone enclosure of a column with a statue of the Virgin Mary, and gold rings with gemstones from a grave found in the parish church.
VERNISAGE AND ACCOMPANYING PROGRAMS
The vernissage will take place on the 13th of November at 5 p.m. at the Kinsky Castle. It will also include the ceremonial christening of a new publication, Valašské Meziříčí: Medieval and Early Modern Town – Archaeology. You will have the opportunity to meet its authors in person and learn many interesting things from them during lectures that will take place throughout the exhibition. The author of the exhibition and archaeologist at the Museum of the Moravian Wallachia region, Samuel Španihel, will guide you through the exhibition during guided excursions (dates to be confirmed). School groups can also visit the exhibition as part of the year-round lecture program Archaeology of Moravian Wallachia, which will be adapted for the duration of the exhibition so that the museum objects on display can be used.
